Calligraphy was inspired by an exhibition of Asian calligraphy artwork at the Phoenix Art Museum. The pure beauty of each piece as a work of art was impressive. The fact that each item also contained vocabulary and meaning beyond my understanding was personally intriguing. In this composition, my attempt was to capture elements of the blank canvas and the dots, lines, and curves of the calligraphy, then gradually, unobtrusively create a melodic and harmonic meaning for the piece within those gestures. The piece is partly aleatoric, giving freedom to the performers to pace these fragmented ideas within the given structure. click on the cover page to view an excerpt of the piece
