. . . an excellent vehicle for roll development
and an enjoyable piece to perform as well. - Tom
Morgan Printed by permission of the Percussive Arts Society, inc.
Through a variety of textures, key
signatures, and clearly indicated hand-to-hand, sequenced, and independent
rolls, this four-mallet, unaccompanied marimba solo gradually develops over a
simple melodic idea. Written in arch form, the composition opens in chorale
style using all three roll types. An
arpeggiated pattern emerges in the right hand over a left hand independent
roll at the interval of a fifth. The same melodic material moves through several key
centers and becomes gradually more complex. The piece
winds down by reversing the order of material, moving through sixteenth
notes, eighth notes, and ending with
the chorale section.
