Solitude

Solitude
is a programmatic work based on the piece of art entitled Nevisian
Underground #1 by James Casebere.
Nevis is an island in the
Caribbean
and the structure this artwork is modeled after is an underground
prison facility, long since abandoned.
The concept behind my composition is of an individual seeking
solitude from the chaos of Carnival – a festive celebration in the
Caribbean
islands. The opening
material is the sounds of that festival from a distance.
As the individual travels into this underground facility, the
noises of the outside gradually disappear and a variety of echoes
take over. Further
underground, a sense of eeriness, concern, and tension begin to rise
up, but resolve into peace, albeit accompanied by a lonesome
feeling. As the
individual becomes more comfortable, instead of feeling alone, he is
able to appreciate the quiet solitude in a time of meditation.
